So, here I am, learning how to advertise and do all that self-promotional stuff that goes along with being an indie author. Look at me go! Taking off like a shot… okay, more like rolling slowly and looking at things optimistically with a little (or a lot) of help from some good people. But, hey, it’s not like I’ve done this before. And I like to think I’m getting better.
I admit that I was forced to... um... that I happily learned how to use Twitter over the past couple of months, something which I had avoided like the plague... I mean I just hadn’t found the time to do. It’s not as painful as expected, and I really like the posts of some of the people that I’m now following. Other indie authors share excellent advice, and established people of authority in the writing industry lead by example for what does and doesn’t work. I’ve even garnered a few people who follow me through adding myself to their followers, and I’ve been able to bounce some of the cool advice and promotions slightly further into the world with retweeting.
I ramped up my friend count on Facebook over the past couple of weeks, as well. If nothing else, my news feed is now full of jokes and inspirational quotes, with only a dabbling of political statements. I rather like the new balance, and I’m impressed that it appears many of the people who added me as a “friend” have actually stuck around more than a couple of days. There are – of course – those who realized in forty-eight hours or less that someone happily married isn’t going to respond to “so sexxy” being written on random things and have since unfriended me, but a lot more people than expected stuck around so far.
Apparently creating this blog will help, too, with the advertising stuff. This simple page gives the internet robots a bunch of words to look at, and I’ve been advised by people somewhat (actually a lot) smarter than I am with electronical items that the robots like words. Well, at least I hope the robots enjoy having words to search through. It would be a rather boring existence to be created to look for single letters or – eww – only white space… Words are much more entertaining.
I’m assuming that over the next years I’ll get much better at all of this. Practicing often improves actions into positive habits with proper guidance and training (shameless plug for the support from FriesenPress goes here). And a few mistakes… those help a lot. Usually in hindsight, as you never really know if it’ll be a mistake until you’re looking backwards at it. (I’d say my learning from mistakes was due to an unfortunate amount of experience, but the experience wouldn’t have happened without the mistakes and I really like the level of crazy I’ve attained... wait, I mean the person I’ve become as a culmination of those mistakes.)
So, fingers crossed and off we go that the self-promotions will get easier as I get better at it. If you made it this far – Thank You! Maybe I can get you to check out my book…? Okay, so I’m still working on a sales pitch that’s any good. I’ll get there.
